I tried something new this week. I want to eventually use smoke bombs in a shoot so I tested out photographing smoke from a cigar. It was a lot harder than I thought to focus in on the smoke, especially on a windy day. Kudos to Ashley for her impeccable smoking skills. We were on several different overpasses in downtown Baltimore this past Tuesday. Enjoy.

She’s not a smoker and was a good sport for the concept of the shoot. Before I get criticism for this, I’ll state it was only one cigar and Ashley had no qualms with it. I also get a lot of questions about where Ashley gets her hair done. If you’ve been following me for awhile, you’ll recognize her as “the model with the really colorful hair”. Apologies for not posting a Film Photog Friday last week or today. I’ve been swamped with work. I’ll pick them back up again soon, so please don’t stop sending me your submissions. I really enjoy seeing them. Makes me happy so many people are starting to try their hand at film. The best part is, it doesn’t have to be perfect. In my experience, film mishaps usually just add to the uniqueness of my work. I embrace them.
Every time I do a shoot, I also take digital outtakes as well. Mainly just because it’s immediate and film processing can sometimes take a few days. I don’t edit any of my film photos but I do edit my digital ones. Here’s some for some comparison between the two mediums. I like both, just prefer film.

Yep that’s the difference. Hope you enjoyed this set! I’m trying to get better with posting my own work, the next shoot is going to be really weird, so please check back in a week or so for it. I’m really excited. 🙂

You did an excellent job here!! I’ve shot smoke, but always low key with a spot on the smoke itself. I don’t think anyone could improve on what you did without a lot of post production editing and I tend to think that’s cheating. Smoke on ordinary daylight is a huge challenge and you met it well!!

Nope, I didn’t use anything other than a standard 50mm lens on my Canon AE-1
