A few weeks ago I shot again with Ashley who has matured into an amazing model ever since our first shoot over a year ago. For this shoot I used a Canon A-1, as introduced in my recent post, with a 50mm lens and a roll of Kodak Portra 400.

We shot at a park outside of DC and after a good twenty minutes of surprise hiking (half of which Ashley did in stilettos) we managed to find this awesome lake. Now this shoot was actually primarily digital (I recently upgraded to a Canon 5D Mark III) but I couldn’t help but burn some film frames too. Her hair color, a vibrant purple, was magic combined with the Kodak Portra.

Portra’s color always just blows me away. IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL. I went to pick up a roll at Service Photo, down in Hamden in Baltimore and it jumped from $8 a roll to over $11 per roll….I thought I didn’t hear right at first. I know Kodak has been under some fire lately but HOLY SHIT ELEVEN DOLLARS A ROLL? Needless to say, it upset me. Trying to see if I can find some stockpiles of it somewhere for cheaper, maybe BH Photo or Amazon. Until then, I’m rationing.

Like I mentioned before, this was originally supposed to be an all digital shoot, so here are some examples taken with the 5D Mark III.

Now, I know I used to hate on digital a lot but this new camera has made me a true believer. I will never abandon film but after exploring so many options I think I’m going to use them both, together. I like that idea a lot. I feel like digital gives me leeway to create crazy works of art and film brings in that extra kick of personal style and character to my photo sets.

I have some weird concepts in mind that I can hopefully execute in the upcoming few weeks 😉
